Jean-Michel Basquiat’s myth still overrides his artistic oeuvre, “and frequently the historic and cultural context in which his unusual works were created is neglected as well,” writes Philipp Demandt, the director of the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt and co-curator of “Basquiat: Boom for Real.

Tulum is a place of myth and mystery, of Mayan temples, and majestic cliffs. Now, on its most exclusive and quiet southern end, comes Casa Malca. Set along a private beach, perhaps the widest of the endless white sand beaches in this corner of the Yucatan peninsula, the 42-room resort marries three spiritually inspiring elements — world-class contemporary art, nature, and laid-back luxury. The driving force behind the property, Lio Malca, is a lion in the art world, having launched retrospectives at New York's Whitney Museum and other top venues. For Casa Malca, which is by far the largest house on the Tulum beach, he brings artwork worthy of a museum. But Casa Malca is a work of art itself, set in a natural wonderland surrounded by a lush jungle and including three welcoming pools and locally influenced international cuisine. And to best showcase it, there is a staircase to the roof, which affords guests access to a bar, 360-degree views, and the best spot in Tulum to take in the sunset.

PRESS RELEASE BY ART DAILY
Kicking off La Nave’s cultural program with KAWS (2015) and followed by Marco Brambilla (2016) with both massive installations, La Nave Salinas presents its third summer exhibition starring Keith Haring, an artist who -like Lio Malca- considered that art should be accessible to everyone; a philosophy developed early on in his career with his iconic subway drawings in New York to his large outdoor sculptures and murals around the world until his death in 1990.
PRESS RELEASE BY CREATIVE COLLECTIVE
The collection on show in Salinas includes ‘Pop Shop Tokyo’ , ‘Channel Surf Club, Knokke’ , ‘Untitled (DV8)’ , the spectacularly colorful five panel mural that Harring created for DV8 Club in San Francisco and a seven-foot-tall sculpture ‘Untitled (Headstand)’. The exhibition at La Nave de Ses Salines hosted by collector and curator Lio Malca runs from the 1st of July until the 30th of September, Tuesday to Sunday from 11am to 1pm and then from 5pm to 10pm. Admission (in the spirit of Harrings quote below) is free.
The Megaplex Trilogy reprocesses popular culture gleaning from iconic Hollywood pictures. Marco Brambilla re-contextualizes this imagery into sprawling human narratives presenting a mega-spectacle of highly saturated visual mosaics.
In TUBE, the chief work of the Lithuanian artist Zilvinas Kempinas, first shown at the 2009 Venice Biennale and since then seldom displayed, Kempinas generates maximal sensory impressions with minimal means. Horizontally stretched video tapes convey the perspective of a tunnel, walking through which evokes new, fascinating levels of perception in the visitor.
This exhibition will feature rare notebooks created by Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988), offering an intimate look at the life of the influential contemporary artist who died tragically at age 27. Filled with Basquiat's handwritten texts and sketches, the 160 unbound notebook pages will be presented along with 30 related paintings, drawings and mixed-media works drawn from private collections and the artist’s estate, as well as a Basquiat painting from the High's collection.
The High will premiere a major retrospective of the work of celebrated contemporary photographer Vik Muniz as part of an international tour. Co-organized by the High and the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography, the exhibition will examine the full breadth of this imaginative artist's career and will feature nearly 120 photographs, including many of Muniz's most recent works.
Lio Malca organiza un concurso de artes visuales al que todos los artistas locales están invitados a participar.

The Musée d'Arte Moderne de la Ville de Paris, in association with Le CENTQUATRE, is devoting a wide-ranging retrospective to American artist Keith Haring (1958-1990). The exhibition will bear witness to the importance of Haring's work, in particular its profoundly "political" content, apparent in his work throughout his career. Almost 250 pictures on canvas and tarpaulins and from subway walls - as well as twenty monumental works - will be exhibited at Le CENTQUATRE, making this one of the largest presentations of Keith Haring's works ever.
With the 11th Hour Auction, Evening and Day Sales, Christie's led the art market with the highest total ever, in any category
“The market will understand very soon that pieces from 1983 to 1987 are just as good. As far as investment, the later pieces have a much greater upside than the earlier works, since they have been underestimated,” says Malca, adding that it is “similar to what happened with Picasso’s and De Kooning’s work”.

To mark his fiftieth birthday, the Fondation Beyeler is devoting a large retrospective to Jean-Michel Basquiat, comprising more than 100 paintings, works on paper, and objects from renowned museums and private collections around the world. His works, populated by comic-like figures, skeletal silhouettes, curious everyday objects, and poetic slogans, are highly colorful and powerful. They blend pop culture and cultural history into critical and ironic commentaries on consumer society and social injustice. The exhibition brings together many of Basquiat’s major works and illustrates the development of this legendary art scene star.
